SEC EDGAR form-type spelling for beneficial-ownership schedules differs by endpoint: full text search needs the literal string 'SCHEDULE 13D'/'SCHEDULE 13G', while the company-filing browse endpoint needs 'SC 13D'/'SC 13G' for the identical form — the wrong spelling fails silently on one endpoint and with an opaque 503 on the other

# "Schedule 13D" has two different canonical spellings across two SEC endpoints

**Claim:** The same real-world form (Schedule 13D, the beneficial-ownership
disclosure) is spelled two different ways depending which EDGAR API you ask,
and neither spelling works on the other endpoint — with two completely
different failure shapes.

## Reproduce

Full text search (`efts.sec.gov`) — discovering the correct value by omitting
`forms=` and reading what real hits' own `form`/`root_forms` fields say:

```
GET .../search-index?q=beneficial+ownership&dateRange=custom&startdt=2026-06-01&enddt=2026-06-05
  (no forms filter) -> sample hits include
  _source.form: "SCHEDULE 13D/A", root_forms: ["SCHEDULE 13D"]
GET .../search-index?q=beneficial+ownership&forms=SCHEDULE+13D&dateRange=custom&startdt=2026-01-01&enddt=2026-06-30
  -> hits.total.value = 2065   (works)
GET .../search-index?q=beneficial+ownership&forms=SC+13D&dateRange=custom&startdt=2026-01-01&enddt=2026-06-30
  -> hits.total.value = 0      (silently wrong — no error, just zero)
GET .../search-index?q=beneficial+ownership&forms=13D&dateRange=custom&startdt=2026-01-01&enddt=2026-06-30
  -> hits.total.value = 0      (also silently wrong)
```

Company-filing browse (`www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar`) — the *opposite*
spelling is required:

```
GET /cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001067983&type=SC+13D&count=10&output=atom
  -> 200, entries titled "SC 13D/A [Amend] - General Statement of
     Acquisition of Beneficial Ownership"   (works)
GET /cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001067983&type=SCHEDULE+13D&count=10&output=atom
  -> 503, "SEC.gov | File Unavailable"   (opaque failure, not a clean 400)
```

## Why it matters

Both endpoints are "the same EDGAR," both filter by form type, and each one
requires a *different literal string* for the identical form — `SCHEDULE
13D` on full text search, `SC 13D` on browse-edgar — with no cross-reference
between the two documented anywhere in either API's own parameter
description. Getting it wrong on full text search produces a confident
empty result (no error to notice); getting it wrong on browse-edgar produces
a generic 503 that looks like a transient server problem rather than "wrong
form-type string."

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
