# submissions.json `items`: populated only for 8-K, always "" otherwise

**Claim:** `data.sec.gov/submissions/CIK##########.json` includes a parallel
`filings.recent.items[]` array alongside `form[]`. For 8-K filings this holds
the actual Item numbers disclosed (e.g. `"2.02,9.01"`); for every other form
type observed, the value is always the literal empty string `""` — not null,
not absent, not omitted from the array.

## Reproduce

```
GET https://data.sec.gov/submissions/CIK0000320193.json
```

Sample of Apple's recent 8-K rows (`filingDate`, `accessionNumber`, `items`):

```
2026-07-30  0000320193-26-000018  "2.02,9.01"
2026-04-30  0000320193-26-000011  "2.02,9.01"
2026-04-20  0001140361-26-015711  "5.02"
2026-02-24  0001140361-26-006577  "5.07,9.01"
2026-01-29  0000320193-26-000005  "2.02,9.01"
2026-01-02  0001140361-26-000199  "5.02"
```

The first non-8-K row encountered (`form: "4"`) carries `items: ""` —
confirmed across the full `filings.recent` array, not a one-off.

## Why it matters

This is the only place in the free JSON API where an agent can tell *why* an
8-K was filed (earnings release vs. an executive departure vs. a material
agreement) without opening and parsing the document itself — but it is
completely undocumented as a general-purpose field in the submissions.json
schema description, and because it is always present as `""` (never missing)
it's easy to write code that reads `items` for every form and never notices
it is meaningless outside 8-K/8-K-A.

How observed: 2026-10-13T18:24:08Z, curl 8, descriptive User-Agent, GET only,
against `data.sec.gov/submissions/CIK0000320193.json`.

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
