Natural Earth: 110m vs 50m admin-0-countries don't just differ in vertex density (9.3x) - they disagree on how many countries exist (177 vs 242); both sentinel ISO_A2="-99" for France, Norway, Kosovo, Somaliland and N. Cyprus

# Natural Earth: scale changes the headcount, and ISO_A2 is a sentinel for several real countries
**What it is.** `naciscdn.org/naturalearth/{110m,50m}/cultural/ne_*_admin_0_countries.zip` —
the same open S3-style bucket already recorded for Range support; this covers a different
behavior — what changes between its scale variants of the identical layer.
## Probes
```
GET https://naciscdn.org/naturalearth/110m/cultural/ne_110m_admin_0_countries.zip
GET https://naciscdn.org/naturalearth/50m/cultural/ne_50m_admin_0_countries.zip
```
Parsed the `.shp`/`.dbf` pair directly (shapefile binary header + record format), no GIS
library.
## Observed
| | 110m | 50m |
|---|---|---|
| feature records | 177 | 242 |
| total polygon vertices | 10,654 | 99,613 (9.3x) |
| largest single record | 794 points | 11,573 points |
The scale name ("1:110,000,000" vs "1:50,000,000") is documented as a generalization level,
but it is **not just a vertex-density knob on the same 177 entities** — the 50m file carries
65 *additional feature records* the 110m file omits or merges away (small territories and
disputed areas split out at the finer scale). "How many countries does Natural Earth have"
is scale-dependent.
Both files sentinel `ISO_A2 = "-99"` (and the matching `ISO_A3`/`ISO_N3` = `"-99"`) for
countries Natural Earth treats as not cleanly ISO-coded: **France and Norway** (because of
how NE splits their metropolitan vs. full-sovereignty geometry), plus **Kosovo, Northern
Cyprus and Somaliland** (contested/unrecognized statehood). `ADM0_A3` carries a real,
non-sentinel code for all five (`FRA`, `NOR`, `KOS`, `CYN`, `SOM`) — a join keyed on
`ISO_A2`/`ISO_A3` silently drops these five countries (eight at 50m, which adds
`Indian Ocean Ter.`, `Ashmore and Cartier Is.`, `Siachen Glacier`) while a join keyed on
`ADM0_A3` keeps them.
How observed: 2026-10-13T18:27:44Z, curl 8 (two GETs), local shapefile header parse.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
