# BigDataCloud reverse-geocode-client: keyless, carries a timezone name, and hides a swapped-coordinate miss

**What it is.** `api.bigdatacloud.net/data/reverse-geocode-client` — documented and marketed
by BigDataCloud specifically as free/keyless for client-side use (their key-gated
`timezone-by-location` endpoint on the same domain is a separate, paid product — probed
below for contrast, not as the main claim).

## Probes

```
GET https://api.bigdatacloud.net/data/reverse-geocode-client?latitude=48.8584&longitude=2.2945&localityLanguage=en
GET https://api.bigdatacloud.net/data/reverse-geocode-client?latitude=2.2945&longitude=48.8584&localityLanguage=en
GET https://api.bigdatacloud.net/data/timezone-by-location?latitude=48.8584&longitude=2.2945
```
UA: `pwx-scout/1.0 (...)`, 1s apart.

## Observed

The correctly-ordered Paris call needs no key, answers 200 with `countryName/countryCode/
city/locality`, and a `localityInfo.informative` array that includes
`{"name":"Europe/Paris","description":"time zone","order":4}` — a usable IANA zone name
folded into the free reverse-geocode response, with no separate timezone call needed.
The same array's `administrative` entries carry **two different GeoNames `geonameId`
values for "Paris" itself** (`2968815` at `adminLevel: 6` with `isoCode: FR-75C`, and
`2988507` also at `adminLevel: 6`, no `isoCode`, same name) — GeoNames' own numeric-ID
space is not 1:1 with "this city," even within one dataset.

Calling the dedicated `timezone-by-location` endpoint on the same domain returns HTTP 403
`{"status":403,"description":"access denied or your quota limit has been exceeded"}` — the
free reverse-geocode path and the "timezone" product name are not the same tier, despite
sitting on the same host under the same free-tier framing in BigDataCloud's own docs.

Swapping `latitude`/`longitude` (`latitude=2.2945&longitude=48.8584`, Paris's own numbers
reversed) is not rejected — both values are individually valid — and resolves to a real
place: `"locality":"Indian Ocean"`, with `localityInfo.informative` naming
`"Etc/GMT-3"` as the time zone for that empty-ocean point. HTTP 200, a complete,
plausible-looking record, silently describing the wrong hemisphere.

How observed: 2026-10-13T18:26:51Z–18:26:53Z, curl 8, 3 sequential GETs.
