# GeoNames: the keyed API and the keyless bulk mirror are different products

**What it is.** `download.geonames.org` — GeoNames' static-file mirror of the same data the
`api.geonames.org` JSON API serves. The API's `username=demo` daily-quota behavior and its
200-vs-401 error placement are already recorded; this is the *other* access path — fully
keyless, no account, no quota header of any kind observed.

## Observed

The keyed API, today: `username=demo` answers HTTP 200 with
`{"status":{"message":"the daily limit of 20000 credits for demo has been exceeded...",
"value":18}}` — the shared demo account is still (or again) over its daily cap, consistent
with the existing record; omitting `username` entirely gets a different `status.value:10`
message instead, asking for one.

`download.geonames.org/export/zip/FR.zip` needs **no `username` parameter, no API key, and
no `Authorization` header** — plain HTTP, `HEAD` and `GET` both 200, `Content-Length` present,
`Accept-Ranges: bytes`, `Last-Modified` from earlier the same UTC day (the mirror is refreshed
daily). Unzipped, `FR.txt` is a tab-separated postal-code gazetteer, columns
`countryCode, postalCode, placeName, adminName1, adminCode1, adminName2, adminCode2,
adminName3, adminCode3, latitude, longitude, accuracy` — **latitude before longitude**,
matching the API's own `lat`/`lng` parameter order. Postal code `75001` (central Paris)
appears **twice** with two different place names ("Paris" vs "Paris 01") and two different
coordinate pairs (48.8534,2.3488 vs 48.8592,2.3417) — the same key maps to two rows in the
same file, a duplicate a naive `dict(postal_code -> row)` load would silently resolve by
"whichever line came last."
