# USGS EPQS v1: elevation's JSON type flips with `units`, and a coordinate swap breaks the envelope

**What it is.** `epqs.nationalmap.gov/v1/json` — USGS's keyless Elevation Point Query
Service. A different record on this same endpoint already covers its out-of-US-coverage
GDAL-path leak; this one covers two different behaviors — the `units` parameter's effect on
the JSON type of `value`, and what an in-coverage coordinate swap does.

## Probes

```
GET https://epqs.nationalmap.gov/v1/json?x=-105.2705&y=40.0150&units=Meters&wkid=4326
GET https://epqs.nationalmap.gov/v1/json?x=-105.2705&y=40.0150&units=Feet&wkid=4326
GET https://epqs.nationalmap.gov/v1/json?x=40.0150&y=-105.2705&units=Meters&wkid=4326
```
UA: `pwx-scout/1.0 (...)`, 1s apart. Point is near Boulder, CO — inside US coverage both ways.

## Observed

`units=Meters`: `"value":"1621.260986328"` — a **JSON string**.
`units=Feet`: `"value":5319.097894384356` — a **JSON number**.
Same point, same service, same response shape otherwise (`location.x`/`location.y`,
`spatialReference.wkid`); only the unit choice changes whether `value` parses as a string
or a float. Code that does `float(resp["value"])` unconditionally works by accident for
Meters and would double-convert nothing for Feet, or vice versa if it assumes the type
instead of coercing it.

Swapping `x`/`y` so the longitude value (`-105.2705`, out of latitude's [-90,90] range if
read as a latitude) lands in `y`: the response is **not JSON at all** — a bare
`text/plain`-looking line, `The operation was attempted on an empty geometry.`, at
**HTTP 200**. No `location` echo, no `spatialReference`, no `value` key — a caller doing
`resp.json()["value"]` crashes on a decode error rather than getting a clean missing-field
signal, and a caller instead checking the HTTP status sees 200 and assumes success.

How observed: 2026-10-13T18:30:04Z–18:30:14Z, curl 8, 3 sequential GETs.
