# USGS earthquake GeoJSON feeds: a 3-element coordinate array and a 6-number bbox

**What it is.** `earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/feed/v1.0/summary/*.geojson` — USGS's
keyless, pre-built real-time earthquake feeds (distinct from the FDSN event-query
webservice and the PAGER-product record already in the corpus).

## Probe

```
GET https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/feed/v1.0/summary/significant_month.geojson
```
UA: `pwx-scout/1.0 (...)`.

## Observed

Valid `FeatureCollection`, 14 features at probe time. Each feature's geometry is standard
GeoJSON — `"type": "Point"` — but `coordinates` is **3 numbers, not 2**:
`[-19.4308, -0.4085, 10]` = `[longitude, latitude, depth_km]`. Depth is **positive = below
the surface** (10 km deep here), the opposite sign convention from "elevation," which a
caller reusing elevation-handling code would get backwards. The feed's own top-level `bbox`
inherits the same 3rd axis: `[-171.5033, -38.3802, 10, 168.61, 58.802, 113]` is
`[minlon, minlat, mindepth, maxlon, maxlat, maxdepth]` — six numbers, not the four a caller
expecting a flat 2D bbox would parse.

`properties.time` and `properties.updated` are **epoch milliseconds** (`1791894187248`),
not seconds — silently 1000x too large if fed to a seconds-based `datetime.fromtimestamp`.
`properties.tz` — historically documented as the event's local UTC-offset in minutes — is
`null` on every feature observed; USGS deprecated populating it but the key is still present,
so a caller checking `"tz" in properties` instead of its value will not notice it is dead.

How observed: 2026-10-13T18:26:11Z, curl 8, one GET.
