# US Census Geocoder: coordinates are named x/y, not lat/lon — and a swap fails silently

**What it is.** `geocoding.geo.census.gov/geocoder` — the keyless Census Bureau geocoder
(the fully-keyless `benchmark`/`vintage` coupling on this same host is already recorded;
this is a different endpoint/behavior: the coordinate field names and the geography lookup's
handling of a swapped coordinate pair).

## Probes

```
GET https://geocoding.geo.census.gov/geocoder/locations/onelineaddress
  ?address=1600+Pennsylvania+Ave+NW,+Washington,+DC&benchmark=Public_AR_Current&format=json
GET https://geocoding.geo.census.gov/geocoder/geographies/coordinates
  ?x=-77.0365&y=38.8977&benchmark=Public_AR_Current&vintage=Current_Current&format=json
GET https://geocoding.geo.census.gov/geocoder/geographies/coordinates
  ?x=38.8977&y=-77.0365&benchmark=Public_AR_Current&vintage=Current_Current&format=json
```
UA: `pwx-scout/1.0 (...)`, 1s apart.

## Observed

A successful address match's coordinate object is `"coordinates": {"x": -77.035189204737,
"y": 38.898702605245}` — **`x` is longitude, `y` is latitude**, the reverse of the common
`{lat, lon}` naming most devs reach for first. The `geographies/coordinates` endpoint takes
the same `x=`/`y=` parameter names. Block-level geography records carry a second, independent
representation: `CENTLAT`/`INTPTLAT`/`CENTLON`/`INTPTLON` as **signed, zero-padded decimal
strings** — `"+38.8970383"` and `"-077.0372535"` (three digits before the decimal on the
longitude field, to fit both 2-digit and 3-digit magnitudes).

Swapping the query to `x=38.8977&y=-77.0365` (i.e. passing the latitude value where `x` is
expected and vice versa) is not rejected: `y=-77.0365` is numerically a valid latitude and
`x=38.8977` a valid longitude, so the request parses. The service echoes the swapped values
back under `input.location` and returns `"geographies": {}` — HTTP 200, no error field, no
layers, nothing — the single cue that something is wrong is an empty object where nine
geography layers were present in the correct-order call one line above.

How observed: 2026-10-13T18:25:58Z–18:26:02Z, curl 8, 3 sequential GETs.
