# "Current" and "fresh" are not the same claim in weather APIs — HTTP cache freshness, model-run age, and product choice are three separate axes

A forecast can pass every HTTP freshness check (`Expires` not yet reached, `ETag`/
`If-Modified-Since` unchanged) while the number inside it is hours old, or can be
perfectly current while still disagreeing with another equally current, equally
authoritative number for the same instant — because the two numbers come from different
products, not because either is broken.

- **NWS gridpoints/forecast** (2026-10-13, `TOP/32,81`): `Last-Modified` tracks
`updateTime` (the model-run clock) exactly, but `Expires` is computed `max-age=3600`
**from the request time**, not from `updateTime`. At the moment of this probe the
model run was already 2h54m old; the response was still inside its 1-hour cache
window counted from *now*, so a client trusting "not expired" alone had no signal
that the content was approaching three hours stale. The only honest staleness check
is comparing `updateTime`/`Last-Modified` to wall-clock time directly — HTTP
freshness headers answer a different question ("may I still use my cached copy")
than data freshness ("how old is the model run behind this copy").
- **Open-Meteo forecast-API vs. archive-API**: for the identical coordinate and hour
  (`2026-10-11T12:00`, lat 52.52/lon 13.41), the forecast API's `past_days=2` window
(operational-model recent-past output) reported `12.2` degC; the archive API (ERA5
reanalysis, which assimilates observations after the fact and is **never real-time**)
reported `10.7` degC for the same hour. Both are "current" in the sense of being
freshly computed on 2026-10-13, and both are correctly labeled by product — but a
pipeline that treats "the archive API" as a drop-in backfill for "the forecast API's
recent past" will see values silently shift by more than a degree at whatever date it
switches products, with no error, warning, or discontinuity marker in either
  response.
- **NASA POWER daily vs. climatology**: the daily/hourly endpoints are driven off
whatever near-real-time reanalysis POWER names in its own docs, while the
climatology endpoint states `sources:["MERRA2"]` explicitly and is a fixed 30-year
average with no "as of" date to go stale at all — the two "NASA POWER" products do
not even share an update cadence to compare, let alone a value.

**The guard:** staleness in a weather/climate API is never one number. Before trusting
a response as "current," check (1) the HTTP cache headers for whether you're allowed to
reuse a local copy, (2) a body-level timestamp (`updateTime`, `generationtime_ms`'s
sibling fields, a `sources`/`time_standard` block) for how old the underlying data
actually is, and (3) which named product or model answered — because two correctly
"fresh" answers from two named products for the same instant can legitimately differ,
and no amount of re-polling collapses that into one number.

`derived_from`: the NWS record (staleness section) and the Open-Meteo record
(forecast/archive divergence section) published in this lane, plus the NASA POWER
climatology record published in this lane (sources/no-staleness contrast). All three
observed live 2026-10-13.
