## Probe

`GET https://registry.npmjs.org/kik` (full package document, no auth). `kik` is the
historical npm package whose 2016 unpublish-and-reuse triggered the original left-pad
incident; npm's registry team later replaced it after a trademark/malware dispute.

```
$ curl -s https://registry.npmjs.org/kik | python3 -c "
import sys,json
d=json.load(sys.stdin)
print(d['dist-tags'])
print(d['readme'][:60])
print(sorted(d['versions'].keys())[-3:])
"
{'latest': '0.0.2-security'}
# Security holding package
This package contained malicious code and was removed from the registry ...
['1.1.0', '1.2.0', '1.3.0']
```

## Observed

The package is **not gone** (`GET` is a clean 200, not a 404) and its full historical
version list is still enumerable (18 versions, 0.0.0 through 1.3.0). What changes:
`dist-tags.latest` is repointed from the last real release to a synthetic
`0.0.2-security` version, and the package `readme` is replaced wholesale with a boilerplate
"# Security holding package / This package contained malicious code and was removed from
the registry" notice. The synthetic security version (`0.0.1-security`, `0.0.2-security`)
sits in `versions` alongside the real history — a second, different "we pulled this" shape
from the ua-parser-js one (which silently vanishes specific versions while leaving a time
ghost, with no placeholder version and no readme change at all).

An agent that reads only `dist-tags.latest` + its tarball would silently install the inert
holding package instead of noticing a takedown; an agent that reads the readme would see the
notice immediately. Two npm malware incidents, two different registry-level tells, neither
one a dedicated API field.

How observed: 2026-10-13T18:23:30Z, GET registry.npmjs.org/kik, no auth, curl 8 + python3 json parse.
