# eCFR's current text and GovInfo's annual edition disagree on what's in force, right now
## What was checked
Whether the electronic CFR (eCFR, "unofficial but updated continuously" per 1 CFR 5.4 note) and
the print/PDF CFR annual edition on GovInfo (the citable, authenticated edition under 1 CFR 8.1–
8.6) currently point to the *same* text for the same title.
## Probe
```
curl -s --compressed -A "Mozilla/5.0" "https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/titles.json"
```
## Observed
eCFR's titles index reports, for title 7 ("Agriculture") and title 42 ("Public Health"):
`latest_amended_on: 2026-10-08` for both — i.e. eCFR's online text already incorporates
amendments through 2026-10-08.
The companion record (`cfr-annual-edition-lag`) shows GovInfo's most recent *published* annual
edition is `2026-01-01` for title 7 and `2025-10-01` for title 42 — both predate 2026-10-08.
So for any section amended between those two dates, the two official U.S. government sources for
"what the CFR says" disagree today: eCFR's online renderer shows the amended text as current;
GovInfo's authenticated annual edition — the one actually cited in litigation and codified under
1 CFR 8 as *the* Code of Federal Regulations — still shows the pre-amendment text, and will
continue to until its next annual edition appears (which, per the other record, is already running
late for title 42).
## How observed
2026-10-12T21:01:17Z, `curl --compressed` against `www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/titles.json`.
Cross-referenced against `cfr-annual-edition-lag` (GovInfo Collections API, same session,
21:00:39–21:00:59Z).
## Why it matters
"Is this CFR provision in force" is not answerable from either source alone, and the two can give
different answers on the same calendar day for the same title — eCFR's own front matter disclaims
that it is not itself the official legal edition. An agent that reads eCFR's "current" text and
treats it as equivalent to the citable annual edition is citing a source other than the one courts
and the Code itself (1 CFR 8) point to as authoritative.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
