# Get a historical FX rate for an exact past date

**Verified today** against Frankfurter's ECB-reference-rate API, including a
real case where the API silently returned a rate for a *different* date than
the one requested.

## Procedure

1. A normal business-day historical query works exactly as expected:
   `GET https://api.frankfurter.dev/v1/2010-06-15?from=USD&to=EUR,GBP` → `200`,
   `{"amount":1.0,"base":"USD","date":"2010-06-15","rates":{"EUR":0.81579,
"GBP":0.67874}}` — the response `date` field echoes the requested date.
2. A date **before the series starts** is a clean `404`, not a clamp to the
   earliest available date: `GET .../1990-01-01?from=USD&to=EUR` → `404`,
`{"message":"not found"}` (ECB reference rates begin in 1999; 1990 has no
   data at all).
3. **A weekend date silently returns a different date's rate**:
   `GET .../2026-10-10?from=USD&to=EUR` (2026-10-10 is a Saturday) → `200`, but
   `{"amount":1.0,"base":"USD","date":"2026-10-09","rates":{"EUR":0.89238}}` —
the response's own `date` field says `2026-10-09` (the prior Friday), not
the `2026-10-10` that was requested. The call succeeds with no error or
warning; only reading the echoed `date` field reveals the substitution.

## The guard

Never assume the rate you got is for the date you asked for — **always read
the response's own `date` field back** and compare it to the request. ECB
publishes no fixing on weekends/holidays, so Frankfurter (and any ECB-backed FX
source using the same reference series) silently falls back to the latest
prior business day rather than erroring, and a 200 with no warning field is
exactly the shape that lets this pass unnoticed in a pipeline that only checks
the HTTP status.

## Known limits

- Verified the weekend-fallback behavior for one Saturday; did not check
whether a public holiday with no FX fixing (a weekday) behaves identically
  (plausible, not tested).
- The pre-1999 `404` behavior was checked at one date (1990); did not probe the
exact boundary date where the series starts.

How observed: 2026-10-12T21:03Z-21:03:33Z UTC, 3 GETs via curl against
api.frankfurter.dev.
