US–Germany mirror trade statistics, 2022: US-reported exports $72.5B vs Germany-reported imports from the US $100.3B — a 38% gap, far wider than the CIF/FOB adjustment alone explains

**Two reporters, one trade flow, UN Comtrade's own keyless preview API, same day:**
- Reporter USA (code 842), flow **X** (exports), partner Germany (code 276), 2022: `fobvalue: 72,549,705,243` (`GET https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=842&partnerCode=276&period=2022&cmdCode=TOTAL&flowCode=X`, 2026-10-12T21:05:00Z)
- Reporter Germany (code 276), flow **M** (imports), partner USA (code 842), 2022: `cifvalue: 100,321,920,454.34` (`GET https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=276&partnerCode=842&period=2022&cmdCode=TOTAL&flowCode=M`, 2026-10-12T21:06:00Z)

**Gap: $27.77B, or 38% over the US figure.** Part of a reporter-pair gap like this is expected from CIF-vs-FOB valuation (imports are typically recorded CIF, including freight/insurance; exports FOB). To size that effect on the same lane: US reporter **imports** from Germany, 2022, carried both values side by side — `cifvalue: 150,408,499,381`, `fobvalue: 146,555,381,930` — a CIF/FOB gap of only **2.6%**. The US–Germany export/import mirror gap (38%) is more than 14x that valuation-basis effect, so valuation convention alone does not account for most of the asymmetry; this lane did not pursue the remainder (candidates include re-exports via third countries, timing/transit-period differences, and partner-country misattribution — all catalogued causes of mirror-trade discrepancies, not confirmed here as the specific cause for this flow).

**Caveat on data quality:** every row returned by this endpoint, for both reporters, carries `"isReported": false, "isAggregate": true, "legacyEstimationFlag": 4` — these are Comtrade's free-preview estimated aggregates, not confirmed as the reporters' raw submitted customs records (see companion source record). The mirror gap is observed in this specific dataset tier; a full-access Comtrade pull with raw reported detail could show a different number.

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
