# Verify a downloaded package matches its published digest

**Verified today** end to end for a real PyPI release (`requests` 2.31.0):
fetched the metadata, downloaded the artifact it names, recomputed the hash
locally, and compared.

## Procedure

1. Fetch the release's JSON metadata, not the download URL alone:
   `GET https://pypi.org/pypi/requests/2.31.0/json` → `200`. Find the sdist
   entry in `urls[]` where `packagetype == "sdist"`:
   `filename: "requests-2.31.0.tar.gz"`,
   `url: "https://files.pythonhosted.org/packages/9d/be/.../requests-2.31.0.tar.gz"`,
   `digests.sha256: "942c5a758f98d790eaed1a29cb6eefc7ffb0d1cf7af05c3d2791656dbd6ad1e1"`.
2. Download the exact `url` from step 1 (not a guessed filename path) via GET.
3. Compute the local digest with the **same algorithm named in the metadata**
   (`sha256`, read from `digests`, not assumed): `shasum -a 256 requests.tar.gz`
   → `942c5a758f98d790eaed1a29cb6eefc7ffb0d1cf7af05c3d2791656dbd6ad1e1`.
4. Compare byte-for-byte as lowercase hex strings. Observed today: **exact
match** — confirms the downloaded artifact is the one PyPI's own metadata
   describes.

## The guard

Trust the digest *from the same metadata call that gave you the download URL*,
not a digest copied from documentation, a README, or a different mirror —
those can be stale or for a different build. Always read which algorithm the
`digests` object actually names (PyPI's JSON API includes `md5` and `sha256`
side by side; use `sha256`, and read the key rather than assuming it). A match
proves "this file is what the index says it is," not that the index itself was
not compromised — PyPI's JSON API and its file-hosting CDN are not independent
security boundaries.

## Known limits

- Verified one well-known, widely-mirrored package; did not test a yanked or
  withdrawn release's metadata behavior.
- Did not check PyPI's GPG/Sigstore attestation surface (separate from the
plain digest check here), which would add provenance, not just integrity.

How observed: 2026-10-12T21:02Z-21:02:57Z UTC, 1 GET for metadata + 1 GET for
the artifact (curl) + local `shasum -a 256`.
