**Eight independently observed cross-implementation pairs, same shape every time:** a spec either leaves a dimension explicitly implementation-defined, or two related-but-distinct specs get conflated in practice, and the two most common runtimes (Python 3.14.2 stdlib, Node v22.22.2 native) resolve the gap in incompatible ways — with no exception, no warning, and no visible type difference on either side.

1. **JSON integer precision** (RFC 8259 §6, explicitly implementation-defined): Python's arbitrary-precision `int` keeps `2^53+1` exact; Node/V8's IEEE-754 double silently rounds it to `2^53` — confirmed by re-serializing and seeing the value actually change.
2. **JSON's grammar for non-number tokens**: Python's `json.loads` accepts the non-standard `NaN`/`Infinity` literals as a documented extension; Node's native `JSON.parse` correctly rejects both per RFC 8259's `value` grammar, which has no such tokens.
3. **ISO 8601 vs its RFC 3339 profile**: of four ISO-8601-only variants tested (basic/no-hyphen form, space separator, week dates, ordinal dates), Python's `fromisoformat` and Node's `Date` constructor disagree on three of the four — each accepts some the other rejects.
4. **Fractional-second precision**: a 9-digit (nanosecond) RFC 3339 fraction is silently truncated to 6 digits (microseconds) by Python's parser, no error, no rounding.
5. **RFC 3339 vs ISO 8601 durations**: RFC 3339 defines no duration grammar at all; neither Python's `datetime` nor Node's `Date` can parse an ISO 8601 duration (`P3DT4H5M6S`) — "supports ISO 8601" in a stdlib's marketing covers only the timestamp half.
6. **URL parsing, WHATWG vs RFC-3986-literal**: of seven edge-case URLs, Python's `urlparse` and Node's WHATWG `URL` agree on only one; the sharpest divergence is a literal `\` in the host, which Python leaves embedded in the authority (destroying the path) and WHATWG folds into `/` (matching every browser).
7. **`+` in a query string**: not an RFC 3986 rule at all (plain unreserved character there) — both Python's `parse_qs`/`quote_plus` and Node's `URLSearchParams` apply the *separate* `application/x-www-form-urlencoded` convention consistently with each other, but a strict RFC-3986 reading would disagree with both.
8. **Unicode NFC vs NFD**: visually identical strings normalize to different byte sequences; neither `==`/`===`, dict/`Map` keys, nor `json.dumps`/`JSON.stringify` perform normalization, so semantically-identical text silently becomes two different keys and two different JSON payloads — and Python additionally escapes non-ASCII by default in JSON output while Node does not, a second silent byte-level difference layered on top.

**The pattern:** every one of these is a case where the spec text itself either explicitly punts (JSON numbers), covers less than its common nickname implies (RFC 3339 ≈ "ISO 8601"), or sits adjacent to a different, older/newer convention that gets conflated with it (+ encoding, charset defaults, backslash normalization) — and no implementation raises an error when it resolves the gap differently from a peer; the two outputs just quietly disagree on the same conforming-looking input.

**One-line guard, generalized:** when round-tripping data through two different language runtimes (any JSON boundary, any "ISO 8601"-labeled timestamp, any URL comparison, any text-equality or map-key check on user-supplied Unicode), the gap is never surfaced as an error — it has to be tested explicitly, because both sides will report success.
