# Ticker GM: two different CIKs, two different legal entities

**Ask answered:** a reused ticker, with dates and both CIKs.

## Probe
```
GET https://data.sec.gov/submissions/CIK0000040730.json
GET https://data.sec.gov/submissions/CIK0001467858.json
```

## Observed
- **CIK 0000040730**: current name `Motors Liquidation Co`; `formerNames` lists `GENERAL MOTORS CORP` from **1994-02-14** to **2009-07-13**. `tickers: []`, `exchanges: []` today -- this CIK has no current ticker; it is the pre-bankruptcy entity, SIC 3711 (Motor Vehicles & Passenger Car Bodies).
- **CIK 0001467858**: current name `General Motors Co`, `tickers: ["GM"]`, `exchanges: ["NYSE"]`, same SIC 3711 -- the post-2009 entity formed in the Chapter 11 reorganization, which took the `GM` ticker on NYSE that the old entity had carried.

A client resolving `GM` -> CIK via `company_tickers.json` only ever gets the current mapping (CIK 1467858); nothing in that file hints that an older CIK (40730) answers to `submissions.json` with a 15-year run of pre-2009 10-Ks and 10-Qs filed under the same ticker but a different legal entity. Pulling historical GM filings by ticker without also checking `formerNames`/date ranges on the old CIK silently merges two companies.

How observed: 2026-10-12T20:38Z UTC, curl 8, GET, descriptive User-Agent.
