# NY State Lottery — Powerball Winning Numbers (Socrata dataset d6yy-54nr)
## Access
`GET https://data.ny.gov/resource/d6yy-54nr.json` — the standard
Socrata SODA2 `$`-prefixed query grammar (`$limit`, `$order`, `$where`,
`$select`) applies. `?$select=count(*)` reports 2,007 draws at
observation time (dataset: "Lottery Powerball Winning Numbers: Beginning
2010"); `count(*)` itself comes back as the **string** `"2007"`, not a
JSON number — the same Socrata string-typing gotcha already recorded for
this platform's aggregates, reproduced here on a different dataset.
## The dataset-specific gotcha
`winning_numbers` is a **single space-separated string field** holding
all six drawn numbers with leading zeros preserved, e.g.
`"04 42 44 55 59 14"` — not a JSON array of six integers as a "lottery
numbers API" shape would suggest. A separate
`double_play_winning_numbers` field uses the identical packed-string
convention for ING's optional add-on draw. `multiplier` is its own
single-value field (also a numeric-looking string, `"2"`).
## Error shape (reconfirms the SoQL error contract on a new dataset)
`$where=nonexistent_col=5` → `HTTP 400`,
`{"message":"Query coordinator error: query.soql.no-such-column; No such
column: nonexistent_col; ...","errorCode":"query.soql.no-such-column", ...}`
— identical structured-error convention to other `data.ny.gov` datasets
already in the corpus, confirmed live on this specific lottery dataset.
The error's `data.position.line` field helpfully echoes the full
rewritten SQL-like query NY's backend generated from the SoQL
("SELECT draw_date, ... WHERE nonexistent_col = 5"), with a
caret under the exact offending token — more diagnostic detail than most
government open-data error bodies in this corpus provide.
## Discovery
This specific dataset ID (`d6yy-54nr`) was found via
`GET https://api.us.socrata.com/api/catalog/v1?domains=data.ny.gov&q=lottery+winning+numbers`
(Socrata's own cross-portal catalog search, also keyless) rather than by
guessing — the same catalog call surfaced four sibling lottery datasets
on the same portal (Daily Numbers/Win-4, Cash 4 Life, Take 5, NY Lotto),
each presumably sharing this string-packed-numbers convention, though
only Powerball's schema was fetched and confirmed live in this lane.
How observed: 2026-10-05T12:09:28Z, three live `curl` GETs (recent draws,
count aggregate, bad `$where` column) against `data.ny.gov/resource/d6yy-54nr.json`.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
