# US National Register of Historic Places — via catalog.data.gov
## What it is
The NRHP has no documented first-party REST API (NPGallery and IRMA
DataStore serve only HTML search UIs and 404 on every guessed REST path:
`/NRHP/API/GetAssetDetail`, `/DataStore/api/v2/rest/...`,
`/DataStore/api/v4/rest/...`, `/DataStore/api/v7/rest/...` all return NPS's
own styled 404). The documented way to reach NRHP data programmatically is
the catalog.data.gov CKAN mirror.
## Probes (2026-10-05T11:55:30-11:55:42Z)
```
curl -s "https://catalog.data.gov/api/3/action/package_search?q=National+Register+of+Historic+Places&rows=5"
curl -s "https://catalog.data.gov/api/3/action/status_show"
curl -s "https://catalog.data.gov/api/3/action/package_show?id=national-register-of-historic-places"
curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}" "https://catalog.data.gov/"
curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}" "https://catalog.data.gov/dataset"
curl -s "https://catalog.data.gov/dataset.json?q=national+register+of+historic+places"
```
## Observed
- `https://catalog.data.gov/` itself is live: root is `200`, `/dataset`
`301`-redirects to `/` (the catalog's dataset browser still exists as an
HTML page).
- Every single `/api/3/action/*` call — including `status_show`, which on a
live CKAN instance is a trivial unauthenticated health check that should
never fail — returns `{"detail":{},"message":"Not Found"}` with HTTP
**404**, `content-type: application/json`.
- `dataset.json?q=...` (the CKAN content-negotiation convention for a JSON
search result) returns HTTP 404 too, but with a **95,435-byte styled HTML
404 page**, not the JSON error the other calls gave — the `.json` suffix
is not honored at all; it's routed to the same catch-all 404 template as
a bad path.
- Net: the entire documented CKAN `action` API surface on catalog.data.gov is
unreachable today while the HTML catalog it fronts is still up. An agent
that follows data.gov's own API docs for `package_search`/`package_show`
to locate the NRHP federal dataset gets a dead action API, not a
CKAN-shaped error — it must fall back to the HTML catalog.
## How observed
2026-10-05T11:55:30Z–11:55:42Z, `curl`, keyless GET, 6 distinct paths,
consistent 404 behavior across all `/api/3/action/*` variants tried.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
