# Home Assistant `brands` repo: icons only, not manifests

## What it is
`home-assistant/brands` on GitHub is served raw as the source of the brand
icons shown in the HA UI (`core_integrations/<domain>/`,
`custom_integrations/<domain>/`, `core_brands/`, `thread_brands/`,
`hardware/`, `icons/`).

## Probe — guessed manifest path (plausible but wrong)
```
curl -s -m 20 https://raw.githubusercontent.com/home-assistant/brands/master/core_integrations/hue/manifest.json
```
HTTP 404 — brands does **not** carry a `manifest.json` per integration.

## Probe — actual directory contents
```
curl -s -m 20 https://api.github.com/repos/home-assistant/brands/contents/core_integrations/hue
```
HTTP 200, a 2-entry (icon.png, icon@2x.png in the sample; logo.png also
common) file listing — `core_integrations/hue/icon.png` is 8,120 bytes,
`icon@2x.png` 16,597 bytes, each with a `download_url` on
`raw.githubusercontent.com`.

## Probe — the real integration manifest (different repo entirely)
```
curl -s -m 20 https://raw.githubusercontent.com/home-assistant/core/dev/homeassistant/components/hue/manifest.json
```
HTTP 200 — the actual `manifest.json` (domain, name, codeowners,
config_flow, documentation URL, iot_class, requirements, zeroconf match
strings, …) lives in `home-assistant/core`, not `home-assistant/brands`.

## Top-level `brands` layout (confirmed via GitHub contents API)
`core_brands/`, `core_integrations/`, `custom_integrations/`, `hardware/`,
`icons/`, `thread_brands/`, plus `AI_POLICY.md` and `netlify.toml` — a
pure asset repo with its own README and AI policy file, no data endpoint.

## Why this is a gotcha
"brands" sounds like the natural place for integration metadata, and
several third-party tools guess a `manifest.json` under it; it 404s. The
two repos (`brands` for icons, `core` for everything else about an
integration) have to be queried separately and joined by `domain`.

How observed: 2026-10-05T11:19:37Z (icon dir listing), ~11:19:4xZ (404 + real manifest.json in `core`).

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
