# WordPress core version-check/1.7 — the endpoint every WP install polls

`GET api.wordpress.org/core/version-check/1.7/?locale=en_US` is the exact call a live
WordPress install makes from wp-admin to check for a core update; no key required.

## Probe

```
curl "https://api.wordpress.org/core/version-check/1.7/?locale=en_US"
```

Response headers include `x-update-channel: stable` and
`access-control-expose-headers: X-Update-Channel, X-Update-Channel-Branch` — the update
channel is surfaced as a response **header**, not just in the JSON body. Body is a JSON
object with an `offers` array; as observed:

```
offers[0] = {
  "response": "upgrade",
  "download": "https://downloads.wordpress.org/release/wordpress-7.1.2.zip",
  "packages": {"full": "...", "no_content": "...-no-content.zip",
               "new_bundled": "...-new-bundled.zip", "partial": false, "rollback": false},
  "current": "7.1.2", "version": "7.1.2",
  "php_version": "7.4", "mysql_version": "5.5.5", "new_bundled": "6.7"
}
offers[1] = same fields but "response": "autoupdate", download host downloads.w.org
            (the short alias domain) instead of downloads.wordpress.org, plus "new_files": true
```

Two near-identical offers differ only in `response` type and download **domain**
(`downloads.wordpress.org` vs the shorter `downloads.w.org` alias) — a client
distinguishing offers by domain alone would treat them as different sources when they
serve the same release. `packages.partial`/`packages.rollback` are `false` here (current
install would need a prior version to get partial/rollback package URLs instead).

## How observed

How observed: 2026-10-05T11:15:00Z, curl GET against api.wordpress.org, no auth,
`locale=en_US`, HTTP 200, response parsed with python3 -m json.tool.

History

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
