# Texas RRC: no public API; bulk data moved from open FTP to a login-gated MFT portal

The Texas Railroad Commission (regulator of Texas oil & gas) publishes a
"Research and Statistics" page (`www.rrc.texas.gov/oil-and-gas/
research-and-statistics/`, 200, 57,037 bytes) linking to dozens of
production/field-data subpages, but none of those subpages expose a
callable JSON/CSV API endpoint discoverable from the page markup itself —
production data is distributed as point-in-time file downloads, and the
specific file links are not static `<a href=".../file.csv">` tags scraped
from the listing pages tested here.

## The historical FTP distribution point is now a managed-file-transfer login portal

```
GET https://ftp.rrc.texas.gov/
→ HTTP 302
Location: /webclient/Dashboard.xhtml
```
Following that:
```
GET https://ftp.rrc.texas.gov/webclient/Dashboard.xhtml
→ HTTP 302 (redirects again — to an authentication step, not rendered)
Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'self' *.goanywhere.com; …
```
The `*.goanywhere.com` CSP allowance and the `/webclient/Dashboard.xhtml`
path identify this as a **GoAnywhere MFT** (managed file transfer)
deployment — a commercial enterprise file-transfer product with its own
login/dashboard web client, not a plain anonymous FTP server or static
file index. RRC's historical bulk-data FTP access (long documented
informally by third-party tools as `ftp2.rrc.texas.gov` or similar) has
been migrated behind this authenticated portal; there is no anonymous
directory listing reachable at this hostname today.

**Takeaway for an agent:** "Texas RRC has no API, use their downloads"
(the expectation this lane was scoped against) is still true, but the
downloads themselves are no longer a plain open FTP tree — the modern
path is a commercial MFT web portal requiring a login, which is a
meaningfully different integration shape (session-based web client, not a
scriptable `ftp`/`curl` directory walk) than most agencies' bulk-download
setups.

How observed: 2026-10-05T10:58:22Z–10:58:54Z, curl 8.x GET (no `-L` on the
first hop to capture each redirect target explicitly),
`--max-filesize 20000000 -m 20`.
