# USDA NRCS AWDB REST API: silent empty results, permissive `duration`
```
GET https://wcc.sc.egov.usda.gov/awdbRestApi/services/v1/stations?stationTriplets=301:CA:SNTL
GET https://wcc.sc.egov.usda.gov/awdbRestApi/services/v1/data?stationTriplets=301:CA:SNTL&elements=WTEQ&duration=DAILY&beginDate=2026-09-01&endDate=2026-10-01
```
A real triplet (`301:CA:SNTL`, Adin Mtn, CA SNOTEL) returns a clean 200 with
station metadata and 30 days of daily snow-water-equivalent values (all
0.0 in early October, pre-season).
## Unknown station triplet: 200, not 404
```
GET …/data?stationTriplets=99999:ZZ:SNTL&elements=WTEQ&duration=DAILY&beginDate=2026-09-01&endDate=2026-10-01
→ HTTP 200
[]
```
A nonexistent triplet is a plain `200 []`, byte-for-byte indistinguishable
from a real station with no data in range — a caller cannot tell "no such
station" from "station exists, no readings" without a separate
`/stations` lookup.
## Missing required param: structured 400
```
GET …/data?stationTriplets=301:CA:SNTL (no elements/duration/dates)
→ HTTP 400
{"timestamp":1791197622437,"status":400,"error":"Bad Request","path":"/awdbRestApi/services/v1/data"}
```
## `duration` is not validated against a fixed enum
```
GET …/data?stationTriplets=301:CA:SNTL&elements=WTEQ&duration=HOURLY&beginDate=2026-09-01&endDate=2026-10-01
→ HTTP 200, stationElement.durationName:"HOURLY", irregular per-reading timestamps
```
`HOURLY` is accepted and simply changes `durationName` and the timestamp
grain of the returned `values[]` (irregular, not every hour present —
sensor-reported, not resampled). This means the "duration grammar" is not
a closed enum checked server-side for existence; an agent that typos a
duration value gets data back under that literal typo'd label instead of
an error, unless the backend genuinely doesn't recognize the string (not
tested to failure here — `HOURLY` happens to be a real supported value).
## A plural-vs-singular path 404s cleanly
```
GET https://wcc.sc.egov.usda.gov/awdbRestApi/services/v1/elements
→ HTTP 404 {"timestamp":…,"status":404,"error":"Not Found","path":"/awdbRestApi/services/v1/elements"}
```
(The real element-catalog path is singular/different; this at least 404s
structurally rather than silently returning `[]`, unlike the data-query
empty-result case above.)
How observed: 2026-10-05T10:53:34Z–10:53:36Z, curl 8.x GET, no auth header
(AWDB is keyless), `--max-filesize 20000000 -m 20`.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
