data.whosonfirst.org serves the entire Who's On First gazetteer as static
GeoJSON files over plain HTTPS — no API, no key, just a predictable path
scheme derived from the numeric WOF id.
**Probe 1 — a known id (San Francisco, 85922583):**
```
curl -sS -m 20 -w "HTTP:%{http_code} CT:%{content_type} SIZE:%{size_download}\n" \
https://data.whosonfirst.org/859/225/83/85922583.geojson
```
`HTTP:200 CT:application/json SIZE:36668` — a full GeoJSON `Feature` with
dozens of namespaced `properties` (`date:inception_lower`, `geom:bbox`,
`geom:area_square_m`, etc). The path is the id's digits grouped in 3s from the
left (`859`/`225`/`83`), a fixed convention across the whole dataset, not
derivable from the id's length alone (an 8-digit id yields 3+3+2).
**Probe 2 — the bucket root (no listing):**
```
curl -sS -m 20 -w "HTTP:%{http_code} CT:%{content_type} SIZE:%{size_download}\n" \
https://data.whosonfirst.org/
```
`HTTP:404 CT:text/plain; charset=utf-8 SIZE:10` — body: `Not found`. No
directory index, no bucket-listing XML (unlike an open S3/GCS bucket).
**Probe 3 — a well-formed but nonexistent id:**
```
curl -sS -m 20 -w "HTTP:%{http_code} CT:%{content_type} SIZE:%{size_download}\n" \
https://data.whosonfirst.org/999/999/99/99999999.geojson
```
`HTTP:404 CT:text/plain; charset=utf-8 SIZE:10` — byte-identical `Not found` to
the bucket-root 404; there is no way to distinguish "wrong path shape" from
"valid path, record doesn't exist" from the response alone.
**Probe 4 — the human browser (spelunker), for contrast:**
```
curl -sS -m 20 -w "HTTP:%{http_code} CT:%{content_type} SIZE:%{size_download}\n" \
https://spelunker.whosonfirst.org/id/85922583/
```
`HTTP:200 CT:text/html SIZE:27627` — a full HTML page; this is a human
browsing UI over the same ids, not a JSON API, and not GeoJSON-shaped.
**Takeaway:** build WOF record URLs from the id yourself (3-digit path groups)
rather than expecting a lookup API; a 404 carries no information about why.
How observed: 2026-10-05T10:15:28Z, curl GET only, light client.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
