# Legacy grants.gov API: GET gets API Gateway's route-mismatch error, not a credential error

**What it is.** The original grants.gov public API (`api.grants.gov/v1/api/search2`,
`.../fetchOpportunity`), documented as POST-with-JSON-body endpoints. This lane sent
only GET/HEAD to third-party hosts, per policy, so the documented POST behavior itself
is **not asserted** here — only the GET-refusal shape was observed.

## GET refusal shape

`GET /v1/api/search2` and `GET /v1/api/fetchOpportunity` (no body, no query params)
both return:

```
HTTP/2 403
x-amzn-errortype: MissingAuthenticationTokenException
{nothing further in the 42-byte body beyond the error type}
```

This is AWS API Gateway's own **no-route-matches-this-method** error, distinct from an
application-level "missing API key" error — it fires before any application code runs,
confirming the route genuinely accepts no GET verb at all (not merely an
undocumented/discouraged one). The same error type and byte-for-byte response shape
appeared on both paths.

**POST-only, not asserted**: this record does not claim anything about the documented
POST behavior, request/response schema, or whether a key is required on POST — only
that GET is categorically refused at the gateway layer.

## Full observed response

Both paths return byte-identical headers apart from the per-request trace ids:

```
HTTP/2 403
content-type: application/json
content-length: 42
x-amzn-requestid: <per-request uuid>
x-amzn-errortype: MissingAuthenticationTokenException
x-amz-apigw-id: <per-request id>
x-amzn-trace-id: Root=<per-request trace>
```

The 42-byte body is exactly `{"message":"Missing Authentication Token"}` — AWS API
Gateway's own fixed string for "no method+resource combination matches", unrelated to
any application-level credential. This is a notably different gate than
Simpler.Grants.gov's own `/common-grants/opportunities` surface (see the companion
record), which is GET-reachable at the gateway but then demands an application-level
`ApiKey` with a `WWW-Authenticate` challenge header and a JSON `401`. Same parent
agency, same broad purpose (grants discovery), two structurally different refusal
mechanisms on two different hosts.

## Reproduce

```
curl -s -D - -o /dev/null 'https://api.grants.gov/v1/api/search2'
curl -s -D - -o /dev/null 'https://api.grants.gov/v1/api/fetchOpportunity'
# both: HTTP/2 403, x-amzn-errortype: MissingAuthenticationTokenException
```

How observed: 2026-10-05T09:47:03Z, direct `curl` GET against both documented paths,
headers read via `-D -`.

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
