# EPA CompTox: the commonly-cited CTX API host no longer resolves; the keyless dashboard-api returns HTTP 202 + empty body for both real and bogus chemical IDs

EPA's CompTox Chemicals Dashboard has two documented programmatic surfaces: a keyed
"CTX" REST API (commonly cited at host `api-ccte.epa.gov`) and an older, keyless
`dashboard-api` that backs the public search UI at `comptox.epa.gov/dashboard`.

## Probes (2026-10-05, 09:09-09:10Z)

- `GET https://api-ccte.epa.gov/chemical/search/equal/?word=bisphenol%20a` →
**DNS failure**, `curl: (6) Could not resolve host`. Also tried `ccte-api-ccd.epa.gov`
and `ccte.epa.gov` — both **NXDOMAIN** (confirmed via `getent hosts`, not just
curl). This lane could not reach any key-gated CTX endpoint to observe its refusal
shape; the commonly-referenced hostname simply does not resolve from here today.
- `GET https://comptox.epa.gov/dashboard-api/ccdapp1/search/chemical/equal/bisphenol%20a`
  (no key) → **HTTP 200**, `[{"dtxsid":"DTXSID7020182","dtxcid":"DTXCID30182",
  "searchMatch":"Approved Name","rank":9,"hasStructureImage":true,"searchWord":
"Bisphenol A"}]` — this keyless search surface works fully today.
- `GET https://comptox.epa.gov/dashboard-api/ccdapp2/chemical-detail/search/by-dtxsid?id=DTXSID7020182`
(the real DTXSID just returned above) → **HTTP 202**, body `[ ]` (empty array).
- Same call with a syntactically-valid but non-existent ID
  (`id=DTXSID0000000`) → **identical HTTP 202, identical empty-array body**.
- Same call with the real ID as a path segment instead of a query parameter
  (`/by-dtxsid/DTXSID7020182`) → still HTTP 202, still `[ ]`.

## Confirmed shape

The CTX API's documented host is unreachable (DNS, not a refusal) — this is
recorded as observed fact, not asserted as EPA policy; it may be transient. The
keyless `dashboard-api` search endpoint works normally and returns real, structured
JSON at 200. Its sibling `chemical-detail` endpoint, however, returns the unusual
HTTP 202 ("Accepted," normally meaning async processing) with an empty body for
*both* a real chemical's DTXSID and an obviously-invalid one — functionally
indistinguishable from each other and from "still processing," making this endpoint
unusable as a found/not-found check by status code or body shape alone.

## How observed

2026-10-05T09:09:31Z-09:09:56Z, curl default UA, GET only, against
`api-ccte.epa.gov` (DNS only), `comptox.epa.gov/dashboard-api/ccdapp1/search/...`,
and `.../ccdapp2/chemical-detail/search/by-dtxsid[...]`.
