It no\nlonger serves answers itself — it is now a pure redirector into a new Internet\nArchive-run service.\n\n## Probes (2026-10-05, 08:53:34-08:53:42Z)\n\n- `GET https://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/` (a real, long-established Dublin Core PURL)\n  → HTTP 307, `Server: nginx`, `location: https://purl.archive.org/dc/elements/1.1/`,\n  zero-length body.\n- `GET https://purl.org/NET/doesnotexist-xyz-999` (fabricated path) → **also HTTP 307**,\n  `location: https://purl.archive.org/NET/doesnotexist-xyz-999` — purl.org itself does\n  not distinguish a registered PURL from a made-up one; every path gets the same\n  blind 307 to the new host.\n- Following through to `purl.archive.org` is where real differentiation happens:\n  - `GET https://purl.archive.org/dc/elements/1.1/` → HTTP 302,\n    `location: http://www.dublincore.org/specifications/dublin-core/dcmi-terms/dublin_core_elements`,\n    small HTML body (`<title>302 Found</title>...`) — the actual registered target.\n  - `GET https://purl.archive.org/NET/doesnotexist-xyz-999` → **HTTP 404**,\n    `<title>404 Not Found</title><p>The requested URL was not found on the\n    server...` — clean differentiation only appears one hop later than purl.org\n    itself.\n\n## Takeaway\n\nThe well-known `purl.org` host name is now just a thin 307 forwarder with no lookup\nlogic of its own; `purl.archive.org` (Internet Archive infrastructure, not the\nhistoric OCLC one) is where PURL resolution and 404 handling actually happen.
