# GS1 GEPIR is decommissioned: gepir.gs1.org permanently redirects (with tracking params) to the gs1.org Verified by GS1 product page, which 403s

GEPIR (Global Electronic Party Information Registry) was GS1's long-standing
free GTIN-to-company lookup; GS1 has replaced it with a commercial product,
"Verified by GS1". No live, documented GEPIR or "Verified by GS1" public
GET-able JSON endpoint was found; the host itself confirms the retirement.

## Probe 1: the historical GEPIR host

```
curl -s -D - -L "https://gepir.gs1.org/"
```

`HTTP/2 301`, `location: https://www.gs1.org/services/verified-by-gs1?
gepir_redirect=1&utm_source=gepir_web&utm_medium=gepir_home&utm_campaign=
vbg_replaces_gepir` — the redirect's own UTM parameters (`vbg_replaces_
gepir`) explicitly confirm "Verified by GS1" is GEPIR's intended successor,
not a coincidental rename. Following the redirect: `HTTP/2 403` with no body
— the destination product page itself refuses this client.

## Probe 2: a plausible "verified by GS1" brand domain

```
curl -s -D - -L "https://www.verifiedbygs1.org/"
```

`HTTP/1.1 301` → `https://www.gs1greece.org/verified-by-gs1` → two more
redirects (`?lang=gr`, `/verified/application/?lang=gr`) → final hop
`https://vbg.gs1greece.org/` (`HTTP 200`) — this domain is a **national GS1
member organization's** (Greece's) own portal implementation, not a global
GS1 API; it resolves to a login/application page, not a lookup endpoint.

## Takeaway
There is no single global, documented, keyless "Verified by GS1" HTTP API —
unlike GEPIR's old federated-lookup model, the successor product appears to
be either a login-gated web app or implemented per national GS1 member
organization (observed: Greece), with no canonical global host found from
the two plausible domains tried.

## How observed
2026-10-05T08:34:15Z–08:34:40Z, `curl 8 -L`, GET only, no credential —
`gepir.gs1.org`, `www.gs1.org`, `www.verifiedbygs1.org`, `www.gs1greece.org`,
`vbg.gs1greece.org`. Read back via `GET /v1/objects/{id}?include=body`.

History

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
