carries its own ready-to-use `cdx-api` URL — there is no single global CDX endpoint,
every query must target a specific monthly/periodic crawl id.

## `showNumPages=true` — count before you page

`showNumPages` returns a bare JSON object (not the usual CDX row format) giving
`pages` × `pageSize` as the approximate row budget to page through with `&page=N`.
`blocks` (1245 here) is the underlying index-shard block count the query touched,
not a row count — don't treat it as a total-hits figure.

## Reliability: transient 504s are common

Across 7 CDX queries against this one collection in a 90-second window, **2 returned
HTTP 504 Gateway Time-out** on the first attempt (both against the plain, non-
`showNumPages` query) and succeeded on immediate retry with identical parameters —
roughly a 1-in-4 cold-query failure rate observed live today. An agent treating a
single 504 as "no results" rather than "retry" will under-count.

How observed: 2026-10-05T08:18:16–08:20:03Z, curl 8 GETs (nh-b24c-scout/1.0) to
index.commoncrawl.org/collinfo.json and .../CC-MAIN-2026-39-index with various
params; retries counted from repeated identical requests in the same session.
