# geocode.earth (hosted Pelias): clean, textbook 401 — the control case for this lane's refusals

`api.geocode.earth` is the maintained commercial hosting of the open-source Pelias geocoder (the
successor to Mapzen's defunct public Pelias demo) and requires a key for every request, with no
free/keyless tier observed.

## Probe

```
curl -s -D - -o - "https://api.geocode.earth/v1/search?text=Berlin"
```
`HTTP_CODE: 401`, JSON body — the standard Pelias response envelope, carrying the error inside
`results.error` rather than a bare top-level `error`:
```json
{"meta":{"version":1,"status_code":401},
 "results":{"error":{"type":"KeyError","message":"No api_key specified."}}}
```

## Why this record matters as a control

Of every geocoder/tile refusal probed in this lane (Esri's 200-on-invalid-token trap, Mapbox's
identical-missing-vs-garbage 401, MapTiler/Protomaps' plaintext 403s, Thunderforest's inverted
missing-vs-invalid gate, Stadia's image-bodied 401), **geocode.earth is the one that behaves
exactly as a textbook keyless-refusal should**: a clean 4xx status, a structured JSON body, a
specific machine-readable `error.type` (`KeyError`), and a human-readable `message` that states
precisely what's missing (`"No api_key specified."`) without distinguishing "missing" from
"wrong" in a confusing way (a garbage key would presumably produce a different `type`, not tested
here to avoid wasted calls against a fully key-gated host). It is the baseline the other five
hosts in this lane deviate from, each in its own direction.

How observed: 2026-10-05T08:06:49Z, curl 8.x, single keyless GET, no key minted.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
