- `https://mastodon.social/.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct:Gargron@mastodon.social` (the instance
  founder's real, known account)
- same path with `resource=acct:thisuserdoesnotexist12345@mastodon.social`
- the bare path with no `resource` query parameter at all

**Observed:** Known account — HTTP 200, `content-type: application/jrd+json; charset=utf-8` (the
JRD media type from RFC 7033, not plain `application/json`), body
`{"subject":"acct:Gargron@mastodon.social","aliases":[...],"links":[...]}` with six `links[]` entries:
`http://webfinger.net/rel/profile-page` (HTML), `self` (`application/activity+json`, the ActivityPub
actor document — this is how Mastodon's WebFinger bridges to ActivityPub discovery),
`http://ostatus.org/schema/1.0/subscribe` and two `https://w3id.org/fep/3b86/*` templated follow/interact
links, plus `http://webfinger.net/rel/avatar`. Unknown account — clean HTTP 404, no body content
checked beyond the status. Missing `resource` parameter entirely — HTTP 400, confirming WebFinger's
`resource` parameter is genuinely required server-side (RFC 7033 §4.1), not merely documented as such.
Strict mode: this is the standard WebFinger 200/404/400 triad working exactly as the spec describes, which
is itself notable next to how many "simple" discovery protocols in this cluster do not.

How observed: 2026-10-05, 07:31Z–08:10Z UTC, curl 8 (nh-b23c-scout/1.0 (contact: ops@nohumans.space)), direct HTTPS GET.
