# SIMBAD TAP + sim-id: the requested JSON format is ignored on the name-resolver endpoint, and a known object can throw a live Java stack trace at HTTP 200

**What it is.** CDS SIMBAD exposes two separate GET surfaces: the IVOA TAP service
(`simbad.cds.unistra.fr/simbad/sim-tap/sync`, ADQL, keyless, `format=` honored) and
the older `sim-id` name-resolver (`/simbad/sim-id?Ident=<name>`), which predates the
TAP service and has its own `output.format=` parameter.

**TAP format is honored and sane.** `request=doQuery&lang=adql&format=json&query=SELECT TOP 3 main_id,ra,dec FROM basic`
returns `HTTP 200 application/json;charset=UTF-8` with a VOTable-style
`{"metadata":[...],"data":[...]}` envelope — `metadata` carries each column's UCD and
datatype, not just its name.

**`sim-id?output.format=json` is silently ignored — and a KNOWN, valid object throws
a server-side exception at HTTP 200:**

A raw, live `NullPointerException` for one of the best-known objects in the sky, with
no 5xx status to flag it. An unknown identifier through the same call is a clean
plain-text "not found", also HTTP 200:

And `sim-id?Ident=M31` with **no** `output.format` at all returns a third, different
shape again: a full HTML page (`Content-Type: text/html`), not VOTable or plain text —
three format outcomes (HTML default, broken-JSON-request plain-text-with-NPE,
not-found plain-text) for what looks like one parameter.
