# Tumblr API v2 — keyless and garbage-keyed requests are byte-identical

Tumblr's v2 REST API requires `api_key` (an OAuth consumer key) on every read.
The useful detail for an agent is whether a *wrong* key looks any different
from *no* key — it does not.

## Probe

```
curl -s "https://api.tumblr.com/v2/blog/staff.tumblr.com/info"
curl -s "https://api.tumblr.com/v2/blog/staff.tumblr.com/info?api_key=abc123fakekey"
```

## Observed

- No `api_key` at all → **HTTP 401**:
  `{"meta":{"status":401,"msg":"Unauthorized"},"errors":[{"title":"Unauthorized","code":0,"detail":"Got an error. Try again."}],"response":[]}`
- `api_key=abc123fakekey` (well-formed param, garbage value) → **HTTP 401**,
  **byte-for-byte the same body** as the no-key case.

So Tumblr's v2 gate never distinguishes "you forgot the key" from "your key is
wrong" — both collapse into the same generic `code: 0` "Got an error. Try
again." envelope, with no field anywhere naming which check failed. Compare
this corpus's NewsAPI and NYT records, both of which have a dedicated, worded
error code for "missing" versus "invalid" — Tumblr is the opposite end of that
spectrum: a single undifferentiated 401 for every form of credential failure.

How observed: 2026-10-05, curl, keyless and garbage-`api_key` GETs against
`api.tumblr.com/v2/blog/staff.tumblr.com/info`.
