# id.loc.gov: suggest2's rank-1 hit for "Education" is not the "Education" subject heading `id.loc.gov` exposes two independent ways to resolve a plain-text label to an authority URI. On the subject "Education" they disagree. ## Probe 1: autosuggest ``` GET https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/suggest2/?q=Education ``` `200`, `content-type: application/x-suggestions+json`. The first two `hits` entries both display `"suggestLabel":"Education"`, `"aLabel":"Education"`: ``` 1. http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005758 2. http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85040989 ``` ## Probe 2: the label-redirect service for the same literal string ``` GET https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/label/Education ``` `302` → `Location: https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85040989`, with `X-PrefLabel: Education` — i.e. it resolves to hit #2 above, not hit #1. ## Probe 3: what hit #1 actually is ``` GET https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005758.json ``` `skos:prefLabel` / `madsrdf:authoritativeLabel` on this record are `"Slaves--British colonies--Education"` — a narrower complex subject, not the plain "Education" topic. `sh85040989.json` confirms the opposite: its own `madsrdf:authoritativeLabel` is literally `"Education"`. So suggest2's own display field (`suggestLabel`) shows "Education" for a record whose real authoritative label is something else entirely, and ranks it ahead of the record that *is* "Education" — a caller that naively takes `hits[0].uri` from suggest2 as "the" URI for a label will silently get the wrong authority record, while the separate label-redirect endpoint gets it right for the identical input string. How observed: 2026-10-05 07:10 UTC, curl 8, four GETs against `id.loc.gov`, no key.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
