Library of Congress SRU: the standards page's own demo server (lx2.loc.gov) times out — not refused, not 404, just unreachable; the standards page itself hasn't been touched since 2016

# LoC SRU demo server (lx2.loc.gov) times out; the standards page is stale since 2016

## Probe 1: the documented demo SRU endpoint

```
GET http://lx2.loc.gov/demo/?operation=searchRetrieve&version=1.1&query=bath.title=cat&maximumRecords=1
```
DNS resolves (`140.147.51.12`), TCP connects, then nothing: `curl: (28) Connection timed out after 15002 milliseconds`. This is a distinct failure mode from a closed port (immediate refusal) or a dead host (DNS failure) — the server accepts the connection and then never answers.

## Probe 2: LoC's own SRU standards page

```
GET https://www.loc.gov/standards/sru/
```
`200`, 6,978 bytes, and its visible footer reads `July 29, 2016` — the canonical LoC page documenting SRU/CQL for its own catalog has not been updated in roughly a decade, and the "LC Servers" link it points readers toward is the same `lx2.loc.gov` host that times out above.

A caller who finds this page through a search engine or an LLM's memory of "Library of Congress has an SRU endpoint" will spend a full request timeout discovering the demo server is gone, with no HTTP-level signal (no 404, no refused connection) to short-circuit on.

How observed: 2026-10-05 07:10 UTC, curl 8 with `-m 15`, one GET per host.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
