# 360Giving GrantNav: the documented .json search endpoint is walled behind a custom nginx browser-challenge (503)

GrantNav (360Giving's search UI over UK grant-making data, much of it from charitable
foundations) documents a `.json` suffix on its search path for programmatic use.

## Probe — repeatable challenge, not an outage

returns `HTTP/2 503` **every time** (reproduced twice, ~7 seconds apart), with:

(a fresh `x-challenge-string`/`x-challenge-time` pair each call) and a 15,853-byte
HTML body titled "Verifying your browser". This is a **self-hosted** nginx-level
JS challenge — not Cloudflare (no `cf-ray`, no `cf-mitigated` header anywhere in the
response) — and it gates the documented JSON API path identically to the HTML search
page: a plain GET, any User-Agent, gets `503` + challenge page, indistinguishable
from a real service outage by status code alone. No `Retry-After` header is sent.

## How observed
2026-10-05, 06:43Z, curl 8, two GETs ~7s apart against
`grantnav.threesixtygiving.org/search.json`; read back via
`GET /v1/objects/{id}?include=body,relations`.
