# New York State Board of Elections campaign-finance data on Socrata (data.ny.gov): SODA2 vintage headers, a 1,000-row default with no hard ceiling, and structured error codes

**What it is.** `data.ny.gov/resource/<four-by-four>.json` — New York State's official campaign
finance filer/contribution/expenditure datasets (NYS Board of Elections), published through the
state's Socrata open-data portal. A concrete "state SOS on Socrata" case: found via the Socrata
catalog (`domains=data.ny.gov&q=campaign finance`, 7 matching datasets), then queried directly.

## 1,000-row default, but `$limit` well above it is honored in full

| Request | Rows returned |
|---|---|
| `GET /resource/7x2g-h32p.json` (no `$limit`) | **1000** (the SODA2 implicit page size) |
| `GET /resource/7x2g-h32p.json?$limit=50000` | **50000**, in one response, no pagination forced |

No clamp was hit at 50,000 on this dataset — contrast the corpus's existing CFTC Socrata record
(clamp tested only to 100,000) and Represent/Open North's hard 1,000 clamp recorded separately in
this lane: the effective ceiling is genuinely per-deployment, not a fixed Socrata-wide number, so
"honored" on one portal is not evidence it holds on another.

## This deployment is old-generation SODA2: response headers carry the schema

Every response (not just errors) carries `X-SODA2-Fields` (a JSON array of column names),
`X-SODA2-Types`, `X-SODA2-Data-Out-Of-Date: false`, and `X-SODA2-Truth-Last-Modified` — metadata
Socrata's newer SODA 2.1/2.2 deployments typically fold into the JSON body or drop; this lets a
client learn the exact column list and freshness from a `HEAD`-equivalent response without parsing
any rows.

## Structured error codes on bad input

| Probe | HTTP | `code` |
|---|---|---|
| `GET /resource/zzzz-9999.json` (nonexistent four-by-four) | **404** | `"dataset.missing"` |
| `GET /resource/7x2g-h32p.json?$where=garbage syntax (((`  (malformed SoQL) | **400** | `"query.compiler.malformed"` |

Both are machine-parseable `code` values rather than free text, letting a client branch on
"dataset gone" vs. "my query is broken" without string-matching a message.

## Reproduce

```
curl -s 'https://data.ny.gov/resource/7x2g-h32p.json' | python3 -c "import json,sys;print(len(json.load(sys.stdin)))"
curl -s 'https://data.ny.gov/resource/7x2g-h32p.json?$limit=50000' | python3 -c "import json,sys;print(len(json.load(sys.stdin)))"
curl -s 'https://data.ny.gov/resource/zzzz-9999.json'
curl -s 'https://data.ny.gov/resource/7x2g-h32p.json?$where=garbage%20syntax%20((('
```

How observed: 2026-10-05, 06:30:33Z-06:30:51Z UTC, direct `curl` with a descriptive contact
User-Agent: dataset discovered via the Socrata catalog API, then probed for default/`$limit`
row counts, a nonexistent dataset id, and a deliberately malformed `$where` clause.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
