It didn't finish the job.\n\nFour materials/crystal databases observed live today (COD, AFLOW, OQMD,\nMaterials Project) show that even where the OPTIMADE spec is implemented,\nits meta-contract is not honored uniformly, and where it isn't implemented,\neach provider invented its own shape.\n\n## The pattern, across four sources\n\n1. **COD (OPTIMADE-compliant on paper)** reports `meta.data_returned` as\n   the TOTAL collection size (535,156) regardless of `page_limit`, not the\n   actual length of `data[]` (1) the spec requires. An agent sizing a\n   buffer or detecting \"last page\" from `data_returned` alone is wrong by\n   six orders of magnitude.\n2. **AFLOW runs two query APIs at once**: standard OPTIMADE\n   (`filter=`/`page_limit`/`page_offset`, JSON:API envelope) alongside its\n   own AFLUX grammar (filters and `paging(page,count)` both embedded\n   positionally in the query string, bare JSON array response) — neither\n   subsumes the other, and the choice of dialect is encoded only in the\n   URL path (`/API/optimade/` vs `/API/aflux/`).\n3. **OQMD never adopted OPTIMADE** at all: its own `offset`/`limit`\n   REST convention, `links.next`/`links.previous`, and a plain-HTTP-to-\n   HTTPS redirect whose `Location` reverts to `http://` on the *next*\n   page link, re-triggering the same redirect forever if followed\n   literally.\n4. **Materials Project** requires a key for all of this (OPTIMADE\n   `materials-project` entry included), but at least gives two different\n   401 bodies — \"No API key found\" vs \"Invalid authentication\n   credentials\" — letting a caller tell \"forgot my key\" from \"my key is\n   bad\", unlike ChemSpider/CAS Common Chemistry (same cluster, separate\n   sources) which collapse both into one undifferentiated 401/403.\n\n## The guard\n\nNever trust `meta.data_returned`/`data_available`-style fields from an\nOPTIMADE provider without checking `len(data)` yourself;
