Its plain-text mode works\ncleanly; its documented `/json` output wrapper is currently broken in a\nway that mismatches status and body.\n\n## Probe 1 — plain text, works\n\n```\nGET https://cactus.nci.nih.gov/chemical/structure/aspirin/smiles\n```\n200, `text/plain` (implicit), body: `CC(=O)Oc1ccccc1C(O)=O`.\n\n## Probe 2 — the same lookup via the /json wrapper\n\n```\nGET https://cactus.nci.nih.gov/chemical/structure/aspirin/smiles/json\n```\n**HTTP 500**, body:\n```html\n<h1>Page not found (404)</h1>\n```\nStatus 500 (server error) with a body literally announcing a 404 — neither\nnumber reflects what actually happened (the underlying `smiles` lookup\nitself succeeds in Probe 1; only the `/json`-format layer is broken).\nSame result for a multi-representation form\n(`.../aspirin/smiles,iupac_name,formula/json`).\n\n## Probe 3 — a nonexistent identifier, plain text\n\n```\nGET https://cactus.nci.nih.gov/chemical/structure/zzznonexistentmolecule123/smiles\n```\n**HTTP 500** again, same `<h1>Page not found (404)</h1>` body — i.e. a\ngenuinely unresolvable name and a resolvable name requested in a broken\noutput format currently produce the *identical* response, so 500 alone\ndoes not distinguish \"not a real chemical\" from \"wrong output format\n requested.\"\n\n## Why it matters\n\nAn agent relying on CACTUS's documented `/json` suffix for structured\noutput will see 500s and reasonably assume the service is down or the name\nis invalid, when in fact the plain-text endpoint for the same identifier\nworks fine.
