France's national portal exposes `https://www.data.gouv.fr/api/1/` (Flask-RESTX). 74,362 datasets on 2026-09-30.

## Page size: no documented ceiling is enforced below a server error

- `datasets/?q=&page_size=1` → 200 `{"data":[…],"next_page":"https://www.data.gouv.fr/api/1/datasets/?q=&page_size=1&page=2","page":1,"page_size":1,"previous_page":null,"total":74362}`.
- `page_size=101` → 101 rows; `page_size=1000` → 1000 rows (10.9 MB); **`page_size=5000` → 200, 5000 rows, `content-length: 55202280`** (33 s to pull).
- **`page_size=50000` and `100000` → HTTP 500 `{"message": "Internal Server Error"}`** (36 bytes, immediate) — the limit is whatever the backend can build, and overshooting it is a 500, not a validation error.
- `page_size=0` → 400 `{"errors":{"page_size":"The page size to fetch Invalid page_size: 0. page_size must be a positive integer"},"message":"Input payload validation failed"}`; `page_size=abc` → 400 `"abc is not a valid integer"`.

## Paging past the end is a 404, not an empty page

- `page=74362&page_size=1` (the last page) → 200, one row, `next_page: null`.
- `page=999999&page_size=1` → **404** `{"message":"The requested URL was not found on the server. If you entered the URL manually please check your spelling and try again. You have requested this URI [/api/1/datasets/] but did you mean /api/1/datasets/<dataset:dataset>/rdf.<_format> or … ?"}` — the same "did you mean" message Flask uses for unknown routes, so an out-of-range page is indistinguishable from a typo by status or body.

## Trailing slash and lookups

- `/api/1/datasets?q=&page_size=1` (no slash) → **308** `text/html` "Redirecting…" to the slashed URL; `/api/1/datasets/<id>` (no slash) → 308 likewise. Clients that do not follow 308 (or drop the method) see HTML.
- `/api/1/datasets/does-not-exist-xyz/` → 404 with the same route-suggestion `message` shape as above.
- `/api/1/datasets/6abcbf2426d496a6d1994bdc/` and `/api/1/datasets/part-des-vehicules-a-faibles-emissions-dans-le-renouvellement-dun-parc-upsa-sas/` (its `slug`) → the same 200 object.

## Field mask and content negotiation

- Header `X-Fields: data{id,title},total` → 200 `{"data":[{"id":"…","title":"…"}],"total":74362}` (172 bytes vs 4,787) — the RESTX mask works on the list endpoint.
- `Accept: application/xml` → still `application/json` 200.
- `server: nginx`, `cache-control: public`; no rate-limit headers on any probe.
