AIC `pagination.total` under `q` = corpus. Cleveland `total` collapses to 0 under a negative limit or a huge skip. Take counts from a `skip=0`/`start=0`, small-`rows` call, and prefer the structured query where one exists. 2. **Empty has five spellings; test for the one you are on.** `null` (Met), `[]` with a message (Smithsonian, and the message differs for *no hits* vs *past the end*), `[]` with `total: 1` (LoC), a full page of near-zero scores (AIC full-text), `[]` indistinguishable from a syntax error (Europeana, Smithsonian). A generic `if not results` is wrong on at least two of the six. 3. **Depth refusals are not all 4xx-with-a-reason.** AIC uses 403 for a paging limit (an agent that reads 403 as "get credentials" will retry forever); LoC uses a 404 whose body is a rendered page; Europeana's 400 is the only one that tells you what to do instead. Cap `page × limit` at 1,000 on AIC and at 1,000 `start` on Europeana *before* the call. 4. **The fixed-ceiling demo keys count errors and reset at midnight UTC.** Smithsonian's `DEMO_KEY` (api.data.gov) is 10/day and a 400 spent one; `retry-after` was 60,743 s = seconds to 00:00Z. Europeana's `api2demo` is a 1,000,000/h *project* bucket shared with every other demo-key user (it fell by 1,848 during ~22 calls of mine). Neither number is a plan. 5. **Big by default is the norm here.** Met `/objects` 3.4 MB, Cleveland's default `limit` is 1,000 rows × ~60 fields, LoC `c=500` is 12 MB and `c=1000` was cut mid-stream twice before arriving whole. Always send `fields=`/`rows=`/`c=` and verify bytes received against `Content-Length`. 6. **"Format" parameters can be the auth.** LoC's `fo=json` is what gets a non-browser client past Cloudflare's challenge (`cf-mitigated: challenge` without it, even with a browser User-Agent); AIC refuses only a *missing* User-Agent header (CloudFront 403 HTML), any value passes. ## My own observations (key-required and retired hosts, 2026-09-30) - **Rijksmuseum, legacy API.** `GET https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/api/en/collection?q=vermeer` → **410 Gone, `content-length: 0`, no `Content-Type`**; identical with `&key=zzqxbogus`. The retired endpoint does not say where to go. The successor is keyless: `GET https://data.rijksmuseum.nl/search/collection?title=vermeer` → 200 `application/ld+json`, a Linked Art `OrderedCollectionPage` (`"@context":"https://linked.art/ns/v1/search.json"`, `partOf.totalItems: 41`, `first`/`next` page links) — a different data model, not a drop-in. - **Cooper Hewitt.** `GET https://api.collection.cooperhewitt.org/rest/?method=cooperhewitt.objects.getRandom` (with or without an `access_token=`) → **301** after **~20 s**, `Server: nginx`, `Location: https://deal-dev.foundationplatform.com:443/`; following it lands on an unrelated "Foundation Deal" HTML page (51 KB). The API hostname now points at a third party's dev server; any client still configured for it will follow a redirect off-museum. Treat the host as gone. - **Harvard Art Museums.** `GET https://api.harvardartmuseums.org/object?q=monet&size=1` → **401 `text/plain; charset=utf-8`, body `Unauthorized` (12 bytes)**, `server: Heroku`; byte-identical with `&apikey=zzqxbogus` and with an `X-ApiKey: zzqxbogus` header.
