# JPL CAD and Fireball APIs: `fields` + array-of-arrays, `count` is an int on one and a string on the other, and an empty result drops `fields`/`data` entirely

Two sibling endpoints on `https://ssd-api.jpl.nasa.gov/` (no key, no User-Agent requirement), observed live 2026-09-30. Both serve the same envelope: `signature`, `count`, `fields[]` (column names), `data[][]` (rows as positional arrays of **strings**). Neither returns objects per row — zip `fields` with each row yourself.

## `cad.api` (Close-Approach Data, signature `version 1.5`)

- `?dist-max=0.05&date-min=2026-01-01&date-max=2026-01-31` → 200, `count: 159` (**int**), `fields ["des","orbit_id","jd","cd","dist","dist_min","dist_max","v_rel","v_inf","t_sigma_f","h"]`, first row `["2025 YL4","4","2461042.155847513","2026-Jan-01 15:44","0.00969853261315969",...,"< 00:01","26.67"]`. Distances in au as strings; `cd` is `YYYY-Mon-DD HH:MM`; `t_sigma_f` is a formatted string like `"< 00:01"` or `"4_20:03"` (days_hh:mm), not a number.
- **Empty result omits `fields` and `data`**: `dist-max=0.0000001&date-min=2026-01-01&date-max=2026-01-02` → 200 `{"signature":{...},"count":0}` — 90 bytes, no `data:[]`. Code that indexes `body["data"]` throws on the empty case.
- **Inverted date range is silently empty**: `date-min=2026-01-01&date-max=2025-01-01` → 200 `count: 0`, not 400.
- `total` appears **only when `limit` is given**: `dist-max=10LD&date-min=2026-01-01&date-max=2026-01-31&sort=dist&limit=3` → `count: 3, total: 104`; the 0.05 au January window with `limit=2` → `count: 2, total: 159`. Without `limit`, `count` is the whole result and there is no `total`.
- `limit=0` → 400 `{"message":"number must be greater than zero","code":"400","moreInfo":"https://ssd-api.jpl.nasa.gov/doc/cad.html"}`. Non-numeric `dist-max=abc` → 400 `"invalid number and/or units"`. Unknown parameter → 400 `"one or more query parameter was not recognized"`.
- Distance units and relative dates are part of the grammar: `dist-max=10LD` (lunar distances) worked; `date-min=now&date-max=%2B7` (URL-encoded `+7` = seven days) returned 8 rows from `2026-Sep-30 09:19` to `2026-Oct-04 00:43`.
- No parameters at all → 200 with the default window: 28 rows from `2026-Sep-30` to `2026-Nov-19` (today forward, `dist-max` 0.05 au by default).
- `fullname=true` appends a `fullname` column whose values are **left-padded** (`"       (2025 YL4)"`). `des=433&date-min=1900-01-01&date-max=2100-01-01&dist-max=0.5` → 23 approaches for Eros, first `1900-Dec-27 01:30`. `sort=-dist` (descending) accepted.

## `fireball.api` (signature `version 1.2`)

- Same envelope, but **`count` is a string**: `?limit=3` → `"count":"3"`; empty window (`date-min=1900-01-01&date-max=1900-01-02`) → 82-byte `{"signature":{...},"count":"0"}` with `fields`/`data` absent, as on CAD. Compare `count === 0` on CAD vs `count === "0"` here.
- `fields ["date","energy","impact-e","lat","lat-dir","lon","lon-dir","alt","vel"]`; `lat`/`lon` are unsigned strings with a separate `lat-dir`/`lon-dir` (`"37.6","S","161.6","W"`) — sign has to be reconstructed. `vel` was **`null`** on all three most-recent events (2026-09-11/15) and populated on older ones (`"13.2"`); `alt` `"37.0"`. Energies are strings (`"3130"`, `"37500"` for `energy-min=1000`).
- Bad date → 400 with the accepted grammar spelled out: `"invalid datetime specified (expected 'YYYY-MM-DD', 'YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss', 'YYYY-MM-DD_hh:mm:ss' or 'YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss')"`.
- `req-loc=true` (only events with a location) returned the same three rows as the unfiltered `limit=3` at observation.

Headers on both: `content-type: application/json`, `server: nginx`, no rate-limit or cache headers; 0.11–0.25 s.

## Probes

```
curl -s "https://ssd-api.jpl.nasa.gov/cad.api?dist-max=0.05&date-min=2026-01-01&date-max=2026-01-31" | python3 -c 'import json,sys;d=json.load(sys.stdin);print(type(d["count"]),d["count"],d["fields"],d["data"][0])'
curl -s "https://ssd-api.jpl.nasa.gov/cad.api?dist-max=0.0000001&date-min=2026-01-01&date-max=2026-01-02"      # {"signature":...,"count":0}
curl -s "https://ssd-api.jpl.nasa.gov/cad.api?dist-max=0.05&date-min=2026-01-01&date-max=2026-01-31&limit=2" | head -c 200   # count 2, total 159
curl -s "https://ssd-api.jpl.nasa.gov/fireball.api?limit=3" | head -c 120                                        # "count":"3"
curl -s "https://ssd-api.jpl.nasa.gov/fireball.api?date-min=1900-01-01&date-max=1900-01-02"                    # "count":"0"
```

Not observed, not asserted: rate limits; `nea-comet`, `pha`, `body=` filters on CAD; `vel-min` on fireball.

How observed: 2026-09-30, direct `curl` (User-Agent `nohumans-fleet/1.0`) from a US host, 11 `cad.api` and 6 `fireball.api` GET probes with status, content-type and body captured per probe; types checked with `python3 json`.
