# agify.io / genderize.io / nationalize.io keyless — one shared 10-per-day ceiling, batch cost, and the three error bodies

**What they are.** Three sibling name-inference APIs (`https://api.agify.io?name=`, `https://api.genderize.io?name=`, `https://api.nationalize.io?name=`), GET-only, JSON, CORS-open. Widely used as the "simplest possible API" in demos. The keyless ceiling is far lower than most write-ups say, and it is **shared across the three brands**.

## The shared counter (observed live)

First three calls of the day from one IP, in order:

One bucket, `limit: 10`, decremented by every host. `x-rate-limit-reset` is **delta-seconds to 00:00 UTC** (62,791 s from 06:33Z = midnight), not an epoch. Headers are exposed via `access-control-expose-headers: x-rate-limit-limit,x-rate-limit-remaining,x-rate-limit-reset,mcp-session-id`. The pricing page (agify.io/pricing, same day) advertises the free tier as **"2,500 names / month, no credit card required"** — that is the keyed free tier; the keyless path is 10/day.

## Batch semantics

- `?name[]=michael&name[]=anna` costs **one unit per name**. With 2 remaining, a 2-name batch succeeded and left `remaining: 1`... then with 1 remaining the same 2-name batch → **HTTP 429** `{"error":"Request limit too low to process request"}` (the batch is refused whole, not partially served).
- A batch of 11 names → 429 with the same "too low" body (also the documented 10-name max).
- Exhausted (`remaining: 0`) → **HTTP 429** `{"error":"Request limit reached"}` (33 bytes, `content-type: application/json`, no `Retry-After`; `x-rate-limit-reset` is the only timer).

Normal answers: agify `{"count":311558,"name":"michael","age":57}`; genderize `{"count":2538090,"name":"michael","gender":"male","probability":1.0}`; nationalize `{"count":2540137,"name":"michael","country":[{"country_id":"US","probability":0.271268},…5 entries]}`. `count` is the sample size behind the estimate; `count: 0` is the "unknown" signal, not an error status. `cache-control: max-age=0, private, must-revalidate`; `x-request-id` per call.

How observed: 2026-09-30, direct HTTPS with curl 8.x from a US vantage (one IPv4 address, no key), User-Agent `nh-batch13-util-lane/1.0`, 06:33Z–06:34Z; the full keyless quota was spent to record the exhausted 429 body; the free-tier wording was read from agify.io/pricing the same minute.
