# Hebcal `/converter`: `cfg=json` or you get HTML; `g2h=1` is optional; no date at all is a 302 to today; validation errors are 400 `{"error"}`; `gs=on` moves you to the next Hebrew day

`https://www.hebcal.com/converter?cfg=json&gy=&gm=&gd=` — Gregorian ⇄ Hebrew date converter. Observed live 2026-09-30 with `curl -A "<contact UA>"`, no credentials.

## Shapes observed

| Request | Status / type | Body |
|---|---|---|
| `?cfg=json&gy=2026&gm=9&gd=30&g2h=1` | 200 `application/json` | `{"gy":2026,"gm":9,"gd":30,"afterSunset":false,"hy":5787,"hm":"Tishrei","hd":19,"hebrew":"י״ט בְּתִשְׁרֵי תשפ״ז","heDateParts":{"y":"תשפ״ז","m":"תשרי","d":"י״ט"},"events":["Sukkot V (CH’’M)"]}` |
| same without `g2h=1` | 200 JSON, byte-identical (226 B) | **the direction flag is not required** for Gregorian→Hebrew |
| `?cfg=json&date=2026-09-30&g2h=1` | 200 JSON, byte-identical | ISO `date=` is an accepted alternative to `gy/gm/gd` |
| `?cfg=json&gy=2026&gm=9&gd=30&gs=on` | 200 JSON | `"afterSunset":true,"hd":20,"events":["Sukkot VI (CH’’M)"]` — "after sunset" advances to the **next** Hebrew date |
| `?cfg=json&hy=5787&hm=Tishrei&hd=1&h2g=1` | 200 JSON | `"gy":2026,"gm":9,"gd":12,…,"events":["Rosh Hashana 5787"]` — Hebrew→Gregorian uses the **month name**, not a number |
| `?gy=2026&gm=9&gd=30&g2h=1` (no `cfg`) | 200 **`text/html`**, 50 KB | the web page |
| `?cfg=json` (no date) | **302** `text/plain`, `Redirecting to https://www.hebcal.com/converter?gd=30&gm=9&gy=2026&g2h=1&cfg=json` | today's date is filled in by redirect — a non-following client gets an 82-byte text body, not JSON |

## Validation is 400 with a one-key `{"error"}` object

- `gm=13` → 400 `{"error":"Gregorian month out of valid range 1-12: 13"}`
- `gd=31` with `gm=9` → 400 `{"error":"Gregorian day 31 out of valid range for 9/2026"}` (no roll-over)
- `gy=abc` → 400 `{"error":"Gregorian year must be numeric: abc"}`
- `hm=Bogus` → 400 `{"error":"bad monthName: Bogus"}`

All 400s are `application/json` with `content-length` ≤ 60 and, unlike `/hebcal`, do not echo the caller's IP/UA. The 200s carry `cache-control: public, max-age=604800`, `access-control-allow-origin: *`.

## Reproduce

```
C=https://www.hebcal.com/converter
curl -s "$C?cfg=json&gy=2026&gm=9&gd=30"                          # JSON, no g2h needed
curl -s -o /dev/null -w '%{content_type}\n' "$C?gy=2026&gm=9&gd=30"   # text/html
curl -s -w '\n%{http_code}\n' "$C?cfg=json"                        # "Redirecting to …" 302
curl -s -w '\n%{http_code}\n' "$C?cfg=json&gy=2026&gm=13&gd=1"     # {"error":…} 400
curl -s "$C?cfg=json&gy=2026&gm=9&gd=30&gs=on" | grep -o '"afterSunset":[a-z]*,"hy":[0-9]*,"hm":"[^"]*","hd":[0-9]*'
```

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
