# Datamuse `/words`: `max` silently clamps at 1000, unknown params return `[]` at 200, `md` metadata rides inside `tags`

`https://api.datamuse.com/words` is keyless and never asks who you are, but it answers three different mistakes three different ways, and only one of them is an error.

## `max` — the cap is 1000 and it is silent

| Request | HTTP | Result |
|---|---|---|
| `sp=s*&max=999` | 200 | 999 items |
| `sp=s*&max=1000` | 200 | 1000 items |
| `sp=s*&max=1001`, `max=1200`, `sp=*&max=1500` | 200 | **1000 items** — clamped, no header, no field says so |
| `ml=dog&max=2000` | 200 | 531 items (fewer than the cap exist; nothing distinguishes "clamped" from "exhausted") |
| `ml=dog&max=0` | 200 | `[]` |
| `ml=dog&max=-1` | **500** | `{"code":500,"message":"There was an error processing your request. It has been logged (ID <hex>)."}` |
| `ml=dog&max=abc` | **400** | `{"code":400,"message":"query param max is not a number."}` |

So: a non-numeric `max` is validated (400), a negative one crashes (500), and an oversize one is silently truncated (200). If you need more than 1000 results there is no offset/page parameter; narrow the query instead.

## Unknown parameters and no parameters: `200 []`

- `words?rel_bogus=dog&max=3` → 200 `[]`
- `words` (no query string at all) → 200 `[]`
- `words?rel_rhy=zzqxvv` (legitimate query, no matches) → 200 `[]`

A typo in a `rel_*` code and a genuine no-match are byte-identical. `v=xx` (unknown vocabulary) is likewise not rejected: `ml=dog&v=xx&max=2` returns the same English results as with no `v`.

## `md` letter codes → strings inside `tags`, definitions as tab-separated strings

`md=dpsrf` (definitions, parts of speech, syllables, pronunciation, frequency) adds:

- `numSyllables` (integer, its own field),
- `defs`: array of strings shaped `"<pos>\t<definition>"` — e.g. `"n\tThe hinge of a door. "` (trailing space included),
- everything else as **strings mixed into the single `tags` array**: part-of-speech codes (`n`, `v`, `adj`, `adv`, `u`), relation markers (`syn`), `pron:D AO1 R HH IH1 N JH ` (ARPABET with stress digits, trailing space), `f:0.027034` (frequency per million words), and `results_type:primary_rel` / `results_type:es_backfill_vector_querybased` (only on some items).

Consumers must parse `tags` by prefix; there is no object for pronunciation or frequency. `score` is an opaque relative integer (6 for the one rhyme of "orange"; ~40 000 000 for near-synonyms of "quick"; ~15 000 for `/sug`), not comparable across queries.

Observed: `words?rel_rhy=orange&md=dpsrf&max=5` → exactly one item, `door hinge`, `numSyllables: 2`. Response headers: `cache-control: no-transform, max-age=86400`, served through CloudFront (`x-cache`), no rate-limit headers at all.

## Probe

```
curl -s 'https://api.datamuse.com/words?sp=s*&max=1001' | python3 -c 'import json,sys;print(len(json.load(sys.stdin)))'   # 1000
curl -s 'https://api.datamuse.com/words?ml=dog&max=abc'    # 400 "query param max is not a number."
curl -s 'https://api.datamuse.com/words?rel_bogus=dog'     # 200 []
curl -s 'https://api.datamuse.com/words?rel_rhy=orange&md=dpsrf&max=5'
```

How observed: 2026-09-30 (04:39–04:55 UTC), direct anonymous HTTPS with curl from a single client, each probe above run once (the `max` boundary runs 999/1000/1001/1200/1500 twice, same counts).

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named.
