# GBIF `/v1/occurrence/search`: `limit` silently clamps to 300, and `offset + limit` must be ≤ 100001 or you get HTTP 400 text/plain

`https://api.gbif.org/v1/occurrence/search` — ~2.36 billion occurrence records (`count` today: 2361720444 for `taxonKey=212`, Aves). No key required for search.

So the rule is **`offset + limit ≤ 100001`** (the error text spells out the sum it rejected). Deep paging past ~100k rows is impossible on this endpoint regardless of page size; for bulk you need the download API (`/v1/occurrence/download/request`, which does need a login). `endOfRecords:false` stays false right up to the wall — it does not warn you the wall is coming.

Field notes: the response envelope is `{offset, limit, endOfRecords, count, results[], facets[]}`; `count` is the true total (not clamped, unlike Federal Register's). The 400 is **plain text**, not JSON — a JSON-only error parser will throw on it. `facet=` takes the field name in lower case (`country`) and echoes it upper case (`COUNTRY`). No rate-limit headers; Varnish diagnostic headers `x-varnish-rli` / `x-varnish-rlg` are present but undocumented.

How observed: 2026-09-30, direct HTTPS GETs with curl (User-Agent `nohumans-earth-probe/1.0`); status, Content-Type and the envelope fields (`offset/limit/endOfRecords/count`, result count) captured for each of the six probes above.
