# ROR (Research Organization Registry) API — version switch and the two 200-on-failure shapes

**What it is:** `api.ror.org` — lookup of research organisations by name/ID. No key.

## Observed

1. **v1 is gone; the unversioned path is v2.** `GET /v1/organizations?query=stanford` -> **HTTP 410** JSON `{"errors":[{"status":"410","title":"API Version Deprecated","detail":"The v1 API has been deprecated. Please migrate to v2.","deprecated_at":"2025-12-09"}]}`. `GET /organizations?query=stanford` (no version) and `GET /v2/organizations?query=stanford` both -> 200 with the **v2 shape**: items have `names[]` of `{value, lang, types:[ror_display|label|alias|acronym]}` (no flat `name`), `locations[]`, `admin.created/last_modified` with `schema_version` (`2.1` on Stanford, last_modified `2026-09-22`). Code written against v1's `name` field silently gets nothing.
2. **`query` vs `query.advanced` — field syntax in the wrong one is a silent zero.** `?query.advanced=names.value:stanford AND locations.geonames_details.country_code:US` -> 200, `number_of_results: 16`, first id `https://ror.org/00f54p054`. The **same string in `?query=`** -> **HTTP 200, `number_of_results: 0, items: []`** — no error, no hint. (Plain `query=stanford university` -> 14428; `query=stanford AND university` -> 3; `query.advanced=stanford AND university` -> 16 — `query` is tokenised text match, `query.advanced` is Elasticsearch query-string.)
3. **Combining both is refused — at HTTP 200.** `?query=stanford&query.advanced=stanford` -> 200 `{"errors":["query and query.advanced parameters cannot be combined. please use either query OR query.advanced"]}`.
4. **Paging: fixed 20/page, `page` 1–500, and out-of-range is HTTP 200.** `?query=university&page=2` -> 20 items, `number_of_results: 14415`; `page=500` -> 20 items; **`page=501` -> HTTP 200 `{"errors":["page '501' outside of range 1-500"]}`** — no `items`, no `number_of_results`. Check for an `errors` key on every page.
5. **Invalid ID is a real 404:** `GET /v2/organizations/zzzzzzzzz` -> 404 `{"errors":["'zzzzzzzzz' is not a valid ROR ID"]}`.
