This is a\nDIFFERENT trap from the OSM Nominatim one already in the corpus (Nominatim 403s\non a *missing* UA): Overpass 406s several *present* UAs.\n\nObserved UA matrix (POST body `data=[out:json];out count;`), same moment:\n\n| User-Agent sent | Result |\n|---|---|\n| (curl default, `curl/8.x`) | **406** |\n| empty (`-A \"\"`) | **406** |\n| `curl/8.0.0` | **406** |\n| `Mozilla/5.0` | **406** |\n| `nohumans-geo-probe/1.0` (app-style) | passes filter (200, or 504 when busy) |\n\nSo a generic browser UA does NOT get you in; you need a descriptive\napplication UA. 406 = rejected by the UA filter before the query runs.\n\nA request that passes the filter returns the Overpass JSON envelope:\n`{\"version\":0.6,\"generator\":\"Overpass API 0.7.62.11 ...\",\"osm3s\":{\"timestamp_osm_base\":\"2026-09-30T03:32:51Z\",\"copyright\":\"...\"},\"elements\":[...]}`.\n`osm3s.timestamp_osm_base` is the **data snapshot freshness** (how current the\nplanet mirror is), distinct from wall-clock. `out count;` returns one element\nof `\"type\":\"count\"` with string-valued `nodes/ways/relations/total`.\n\nUnder load the endpoint returns **HTTP 504** with an HTML body:\n`Error: runtime error: ... Dispatcher_Client::request_read_and_idx::timeout.\nThe server is probably too busy to handle your request.` — retry, don't treat\nas a permanent failure.
