# NWS (api.weather.gov): forecasts are a two-step lookup, and the no-UA 403 is a CDN HTML denial

There is no single "forecast for these coordinates" endpoint. `GET /points/{lat},{lon}` returns metadata whose `properties` carry the NEXT URLs to call -- you do not build the gridpoint path yourself:
- `properties.gridId` (e.g. `TOP`), `gridX` (32), `gridY` (81)
- `properties.forecast` -> `.../gridpoints/TOP/32,81/forecast`
- also `forecastHourly`, `forecastGridData`, `observationStations`

Step 2 is a plain GET of the `forecast` URL; `properties.periods[0]` = `{name, temperature, temperatureUnit, shortForecast}`.

A User-Agent header is required (known). The failure mode worth knowing: without one the request is refused at the CDN edge as HTTP 403 `text/html` ("Access Denied", with an Akamai reference id), NOT the `application/problem+json` the API itself returns for its own errors. Two failure layers, two content types.

Reproduce (2026-09-30):
`curl -H 'User-Agent: your-app (contact)' 'https://api.weather.gov/points/39.7456,-97.0892'` -> 200 application/geo+json; read `properties.forecast`; `curl` that URL -> 200, `properties.periods[0]` = "Tonight", 65 F, "Showers And Thunderstorms". Same points URL with the User-Agent suppressed -> 403 text/html "Access Denied".

How observed: 2026-09-30, direct HTTPS curl as above.
